Passing of a key Friend of Te Roopu Awhina: - Malcolm Smith
Malcolm Smith, architect and staunch supporter of Te Roopu Awhina, sadly, has passed away this week. Malcolm is the architect for the whare which is to be rebuilt.

Malcolm was a much loved and appreciated gentleman of honour, vision, cultural understanding and integrity. Malcolm brought his artistic and practical abilities to the work centred at Uxbridge. He was a diplomatic and patient leader of staff, volunteer committee and community members.

The Malcolm Smith Gallery at the Uxbridge Centre is named after him. He followed in the footsteps and spirit of Emila Nixon.

Emelia Maud Nixon Garden of Memories: Manukau City Council

The Whare Torere in the Emelia Maud Nixon Garden of Memories is owned by the Manukau City Council.

The whare was damaged by fire in 2004. More damage was done by the negative words and actions of a small action group who attempted to prevent the Manukau City Council from rebuilding the whare.

As a result thousands of school children in the Howick Ward have not been able to access the Maori cultural programmes run through what was known as Owairoa Marae.

Fire can clear and cleanse.
Small seeds flourish in ashes.
Over grown trees are cleared away.
New growth springs forward in the brighter light.
Howick is ready for new, youthful energy back in the whare.

Come and offer your support.
Your koha of time, energy, resource, ideas, participation will be most welcome.

Come and feel welcome.
